Rustic interior design is all about bringing the outdoors inside. It’s about nature-inspired decor, exposed wood, warm earthy colors and organic elements. Whether you’re building a new home or doing some remodeling, here are some design tips you can use to create a rustic room.

Wood Paneling

Wood paneling is arguably one of the most important and most popular design features of a rustic room because it adds an element of nature and warmth to your space.

This gorgeous rustic bedroom out of Denver features a shiplap ceiling with exposed wood beams.

A pallet accent wall turns this coastal-style living room into a rustic retreat.

Rustic Accents by Woodgrain Millwork are fully finished wall panels that can be easily installed—either in a classic shiplap pattern or traditional no-gap pattern—as accent planks to add some rustic charm. We offer two colors, Weathered Gray and Rough Sawn Oak, that are now available at The Home Depot.

Barn Doors

Installing barn doors is another easy way to add rustic design to any room. These unique sliding doors, which resemble a door you would see in a barn, make you feel at one with nature while also doubling as an accent piece.

Barn doors really add warmth and beauty to this modern rustic bathroom.

Rustic Decor

Design features like reclaimed wood furniture, animal-inspired textures, and industrial hardware can quickly transform a space into a rustic room.

A reclaimed wood desk, parquet wood floors, a neutral color palette and an industrial-style light fixture add character to this rustic office. We also love the use of wood wainscoting, as well as dark wood cove and crown moulding.

In a previous blog post, we shared tips for choosing a front door to enhance curb appeal. Now, we’re going to focus on interior doors.

The doors inside your home are just as important as the doors outside your home. Interior doors both separate rooms and are a vital component of your home’s design. If you’re building a new home, remodeling or just interested in discovering new ways to change up the look and feel of a room, these interior door styles are all wonderful options.

Barn Doors

These unique sliding doors add functionality to any space while also doubling as an accent piece. Barn doors are perfect for creating a modern, industrial or rustic look. Decorative Glass Doors

Modern and attractive, glass doors are a great choice if you want to brighten up any room in your house. Glass doors come in a variety of styles and clarity. Clear glass doors allow maximum natural light, while frosted glass doors (like what you might see in the shower) allow some light while still maintaining a semblance of privacy.

As we mentioned in our last blog post, it’s peak home selling season, which means you may be looking to enhance your curb appeal. Swapping out your old front door with a new one is a great way to create an inviting entryway. What more, installation is simple enough that you can do it yourself. But before you get carried away hauling off your old door, consider the following tips when choosing a new front door.

Woodgrain Doors Knotty Alder 6 lite over 1 planked panel Craftsman door with matching sidelights.

Select a style

Before looking through a catalog of doors, make an assessment of your house to determine its unique style. Is it a colonial? Mid-century modern? Rustic farmhouse? Understanding your home’s character will help you narrow down the options and select a new door that fits. This helpful article on DIY Network breaks down some of the most popular styles on the market.

Know your species

Regardless of your style, you will need to choose a wood species for your front door. Our wood species guide is a great resource to determine which types are ideal for the paint, stain or finish you’re looking for.

Get glass (or not)

Decorative glass is a beautiful option that fits many door styles. However, if you’re looking for maximum privacy, a full-glass front door may not fit your needs. Therefore, consider opaque, textured glass, a partial-glass door or sidelights. Similar to species, there are a wide variety of glass options. Check out our glass resource guide to see which glass option appeals to you.

Don’t get hung up

If your door frame is intact, there is no need to change it. Just buy a slab door whose dimensions will hang on your existing hinges.

An inviting front door creates some serious curb appeal. Here are some simple suggestions that will help you dress up your exterior entryway.

Be Natural

Accenting your door with wreaths adorned with flowers, fruits or greenery is a fresh way to create an inviting ambiance.

lemon wreath

Nothing says summer like an ice-cold glass of lemonade. So, why not welcome guests with a zesty wreath made of lemons, like the one pictured here? Get crafty and make your own or check out Etsy if you’d rather buy instead of DIY. You can also incorporate other citrus varieties, using the wreath pictured below by celebrated floral designer Ariella Chezar as inspiration.

The Flower Workshop

If you prefer flowers, create a floral wreath from the annuals in your garden or assemble a gorgeous bouquet, like the one pictured below.

tulips

In addition to wreaths and hanging door decor, you can adorn your entryway with potted plants, colorful flowers or even fruit trees!

Say Something

No need to roll out the welcome mat with this friendly decor. Say “hello” to this modern, yet playful boxwood wreath. Eucalyptus leaves also make a simple yet elegant backdrop for a DIY  message. Chalkboard gives you the option to customize your message and works beautifully when paired with a colorful floral arrangement.

If you’re going for a bold look, put writing on the wall (literally). Blogger Start At Home Decor likes to change up her greeting seasonally.

hello scroll

As always, look to Pinterest and you’re sure to be inspired by all the creative DIY projects.

Get Festive

Summer is the season to kick back with with a fruity drink donned with a cute umbrella. Get the party started from the minute you walk through the door with this adorable party umbrella wreath. It cost this blogger $10 and one hour of her time to create.

Another easy, breezy idea for a wreath is to use pinwheels, like the one pictured below. We’ve compiled a few DIY options here, here and here that look simple enough to tackle on a rainy afternoon.

Interior set hundred thirty four

While classic styles will always remain popular, each year brings new trends in interior door preferences. These are the popular styles we’re seeing so far this year:

Sleek and modern. With minimalism gaining more and more ground, many people are turning to strong, functional materials, especially for common rooms and home offices. Primed shaker and flat panel doors will continue to be a popular design option.

3-Primed-sz

Bold neutrals. Crisp white is a timeless look for most interior styles, but adding colors like grey, espresso, or black creates beautiful contrast for natural wood accents and flooring. With design options ranging from 1-panel to 6-panel, Woodgrain shaker doors offer a variety of choices that will look good in virtually any color.

Modern interior of hall 3d render

Clean lines. This year, less is more when it comes to door styles. The trend toward a modern look means staying away from ornate details. Think minimal and stick to simple designs.

woodgrain_football

According to the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, post-Super Bowl Blues are real, and not to be taken lightly. As a huge football fan myself, I can definitely relate. But why would I bring this up now when we’re in the throes of anticipation of the game?

Because no matter your team, scheduling some weekend activities to fill the Sunday football void will smooth the transition to off-season. Here are some weekend projects I recommend to take your mind off those (soon-to-be) empty Sundays:

Wainscoting

Wainscoting encompasses a wide variety of paneling styles and is used to enhance many different interior spaces, including mantels, stairways, home galleries, and more. DIY blog Sunlit Spaces has a great list of wainscoting ideas here. When picking the style, consider the impact you want to make in your room. Do you prefer a formal look, or something more casual? Traditional or modern? Would you like to make a statement in the room or do you prefer a more subdued style? There are a lot of options!

A common style that fits many spaces is two-tone wainscoting. If this look is right for your home, I recommend purchasing Finished Elegance for an easy, durable installation.

Replace a door and repurpose the old one

Most of us have at least one pesky door nagging to be replaced – whether the style is dated, it blocks too much light, or the pets have ruined it. Replacing a door can transform an entire room. The first steps to replacing a door are choosing style and materials. Vanessa Brunner of Houzz has a great guide to selecting interior doors here. You can see a collection of customizable styles from Woodgrain here.

Once you’ve replaced the door, consider repurposing it. CountryLiving suggests 17 ideas ranging from entertainment console (for when football season finally returns!) to hanging picnic tables for summer entertaining.

Moulding art

Hear me out. Moulding art may sound like the worst possible football replacement, but Better Homes and Gardens has some awesome ideas here. My favorites are the kids’ art gallery and the headboard.

These three ideas are just the start – once you get on a roll, you may find that home improvement projects are the perfect football replacement. (OK, that’s clearly an exaggeration, but you can see where I’m coming from.) Let us hear about your results, and in the meantime, go Broncos!

An interior door makes an impression that carries throughout the entire room and into the rest of your home. Translate your personal style into an interior design statement with these simple DIY projects:

  • Paint:
A quick and inexpensive way to update a door is with color. If you prefer a traditional look and feel, cool color palettes such as grey and blue can be complementary to existing architectural details without overpowering the space. You can also take a more modern approach with a bold hue that brings energy into any room. To make the room “pop” even more, try painting the moulding to match!

Modern DoorTraditional Door

  • Accessories:
Another easy update to make is changing door accessories. Door knobs come in all shapes and sizes, reflecting personal style in a subtle, yet impactful way. While traditional knobs are typically round and made of brushed metal, there are also modern versions that add visual interest to the tactile experience. Popular trends in modern door knobs include painted patterns, crystal, and squared shapes.
